Frequently Asked Questions
How does Prepper Disk "create" Internet? Does it need Satellites?
Prepper Disk doesn't use satellites, cell service, 5G, or wifi! Everything it needs is on the machine itself, it can create a local hotspots with no cell, wifi, satellite or subscription. That makes Prepper Disk versatile in any SHTF situation.
No matter where or what eventuality - Prepper Disk gives you all its websites reliably, every time.
Where does Prepper Disk work?
Anywhere!
With an optional battery pack, you can use your Prepper Disk anywhere you need. It doesn't require any networks, satellites, or other infrastructure to link you to its private copies of dozens of vital websites.
How do I get updates for my Prepper Disk content?
The vast majority of the survival content on our device doesn't change much over time. How to build a shelter, start a fire, forage for food, trap and other topics are so-called "evergreen". However things like maps and some Wikipedia content is worthy of refreshing.
There are two ways to update your device :
1) Our SD card Path (with full support) is available as an annual update via a fresh SD card. We mail you a new card and you swap out the one in your device. These updates include not only content updates but new features, and updates to all our exclusive content as well. Pricing will be announced for the Summer 2025 update in May. Subscribe to our newsletter (below) or send us an email at support@prepperdisk.com to get on our notification when update cards are available.
2) For our more tech-savvy or "Power Users", you can use the out-of-the-box IIAB admin panel to pull updates for most resources (Wikipedia, maps, and other Kiwix content). Prepper Disk exclusive content is not available to be updated in this way. While we encourage users who are comfortable to do so, because of the variables this introduces to your device (choices in content, capacity, etc.) we cannot offer detailed technical support for this path. There are, however, many online resources that can help as well as folks in the IIAB community.
If you are interested in this path, email us at support@prepperdisk.com with your serial # and we will provide custom instructions for your device.
Note : Currently all devices have the latest available Wikipedia update, though a new one is planned by Kiwix for "Spring".
Do you offer a Military Discount?
Absolutely! Please drop a line to support@prepperdisk.com to get validate for a $15 coupon.
Is It a Hard Drive? How does it differ?
Prepper Disk provides searchable, browsable versions of some of the Internet's most vital websites. You interact with it just like the "normal" Internet. It isn't a hard drive, it is a web server pre-loaded with popular sites.
Unlike a hard drive, you can :
- Connect multiple devices simultaneously to the device - up to 20 with our premium unit
- Browse, search, bookmark, and navigate these sites like you normally would on the Internet
- Connect from any tablet, phone, computer etc. with no special drivers or cables needed. Your device connects to the private wifi network the Prepper Disk creates.
Where do orders ship from?
We ship from Massachusetts, USA therefore USPS Ground is usually about 3 days.
We also have many international customers, and are happy to ship , though shipping times vary depending on local delivery and customs.
Could I make my something like this on my own?
Prepper Disk has over 100 hours of custom software development into it that makes it easy to use, search, and browse. We built on top of open source software to make a product that is easy to use, plug and play, and loaded with content you can't get anywhere else.
We've curated the content to the best, removed duplicates and outdated resources, organized it in a searchable way, fixed loads of usability bugs in maps and PDF's, and added custom content and web front-end. We've also found the best case for heat dissipation, and stress tested the device and tuned it significantly to work in any environment. We also have ebooks you won’t find anywhere else, written by our experts.
You are always welcome to build something similar, but it won't be a Prepper Disk and it will have a lot of the default behavior of Rachel, IIAB, Kiwix etc. which we've improved on, tested, and tuned. But it is a fun project if that's your bag!
Troubleshooting
What are the ports on the front of my Prepper Disk?
Prepper Disks are built on Raspberry Pi's, small microcomputers that ship with USB, power, audio, and Ethernet ports.
For daily use, you need only plug in the power for your Prepper Disk (to an outlet or battery) but you can also use any USB storage device in any of the attached ports, which are accessible via the Prepper Disk menu on our Premium unit.
If you're a little more tech savvy, you can connect your Prepper Disk via an ethernet cable to a larger network and share it across a school, larger family home, workplace, or medical facility.
I received a warning on my mobile device saying "This connection has no Internet access"
Choose "Keep Trying Wifi" if you see this message. It can be safely ignored after doing so.
My browser warned that the connection to Prepper Disk "isn't secure". What do I do?
This is normal using a local device like Prepper Disk - don't worry, your usage is safe.
Permanently offline devices like Prepper Disk can safely use non-secure connections. Read on if you'd like to better understand why : For a website to be secure, it must have certificate that occasionally expires and is renewed. That process isn't possible for a permanently offline device.
My device asked me to "disable cellular data", should I?
Prepper Disk works without cellular data, so you can choose "Yes" if prompted
The "PrepperDisk" Wi-Fi network won't show up, or sometimes disappears.
This can happen if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network that runs on the same channel as Prepper Disk. As a low powered device, it can't always compete with high powered home, office, or mesh systems.
We recommend moving the unit to another location or change the channel on your home Wi-Fi. If you are unable, contact support and we can offer guidance to change the channel for your Prepper Disk
Some PDF documents only show the first page when I click on them.
These documents can be downloaded and read in full, on your device, by using a "long press" on a mobile phone /tablet or right-clicking on a PC or Mac
